2 days in Bangkok

by karl @ Yummy Planet

In 2013, we set foot in Asia for the first time, in Thailand precisely. After this trip, I wrote this post and published it on my own blog, Hobography. In this post, I describe the difficulties we faced in our attempt to tame the city. Since then we went back to Bangkok, more experienced, and it was a blast! Bangkok was the starting point of our trip across Northern Thailand. We were told to expect very hot weather. Some people even told us it was unbearable. So when we got off the plane, I was surprised to find a perfectly enjoyable weather. As soon as we got our backpacks we headed to the city center. The shuttle leaves the underground, it’s 10 am. Fog is still high and makes the landscapes stunning, nearly mystical. For some reason that I still don’t get, I didn’t take a single photograph of it… Anyways, here’s a nice and smooth start for our first time in Asia. Arrived at the station, the doors open. Here it is. The shock we were told about. 40°C in the shadow, 65% of air humidity, it’s kinda like entering a swimming pool. At this moment, I realized the airport and the […]

Yummy things to nibble & drink in South Africa

by Frédérique @ Yummy Planet

For once, I haven’t had the chance to really immerse myself into local food during our trip to South Africa. Shame on me! But I’ve got an excuse: we stayed in remote (eco)lodges with great food options but no real chance to taste South African specialties. And when you’re miles away from civilization, with lions as neighbors, you don’t really have the option to check the local restaurant. Still, we’ve enjoyed some great local snacks and drinks… Pre-dinner drinks & nibbles Biltong Biltong is really a staple food in South Africa. The name literally means “rump strip” (nice uh?). It is in fact a variety of dried, cured meat that you chew as a snack. It’s a bit similar to jerky but never tell a South African it’s the same thing! Biltong is a serious affair. And the ingredients as well as the process to make it are different from the American stuff. In South Africa, you find biltong everywhere: in the supermarket, gas stations… and even in specialized shops. The most common kind is made from beef but you also find ostrich or springbok biltong. I’ve read you can even find shark biltong. To make biltong, people marinate the meat in a vinegar solution. After that, […]

15 days in Andalusia: our carless itinerary

by Frédérique @ Yummy Planet

I’d been dreaming a long time about visiting Andalusia. I could perfectly picture myself indulging in the Arabic charm of Granada and the Alhambra, wandering in the maze of the old neighborhoods of Sevilla, feeling dizzy on Ronda’s bridge, enjoying a flamenco show and, of course, eating countless tapas. This dream came true last May and I sure did all of that and more! In May 2015, just before the heat became unbearable on the old grounds of Al Andaluz, we took a plane to Málaga. We decided to travel without renting a car. We used public transport and carsharing instead. Our itinerary If you are planning to visit Andalusia, you might find some inspiration in our itinerary. It’s by no means perfect and skips a few interesting places (like Cadiz or Jerez). But it gives a pretty good overview of Andalusia, I think. The duration of each stopover is indicated in nights for more accuracy (we sometimes arrived in a city in the evening and departed the following day in the afternoon, which makes it less than 24 hours) and I also mention the type of transport we used to give you an idea of the possibilities. Because of unexpected events, we eventually spent 18 nights in Andalusia (instead of […]

After 3 days in South Africa, we already had a thousand pictures in our cameras and a thousand memories in our mind… So we decided to share a few images and moments of this trip. This post was originally published in French while we were still there. We’re back now but I think it’s still worth sharing, so enjoy! Kirstenbosch National Botanical garden After more than 11 hours in a plane, a nice walk in one of the most beautiful gardens in the world and a delicious lunch were more than welcome. The views were breath taking and we particularly enjoyed the famous tree canopy walkway. The rooibos ice-tea sampled at the Kirstenbosch Tea Room was one of the highlights of the day! Say hello to the Cape’s penguins They are cute and funny and you can watch them at ease from a wooden bridge. We went to see them early in the morning and it was a great idea because after us came the crowd! 5 rules to order tapas like a local

by Frédérique @ Yummy Planet

In Spain, eating tapas is way more than just a cheap way to fill your belly. It’s a social ritual and plays an important part in the daily life of the local. There’s even a verb in Spanish to describe this yummy habit: tapear. Let me tell you how to become a master at tapear by following 5 simple rules. Rule nr 1: bring friends And if you’re traveling alone, make some! For this is what tapear truly means: to tour the tapas bars in good company. Rule nr 2: visit more than one place Tapear isn’t something you do in one place. Usually, the evening goes like this: you arrive in a bar you order a drink and one or two tapas (try to order the house specialty) you drink, you eat, you have a good time with your friends. Optional: you repeat step 2. you ask for la cuenta por favor* (*the check, please), you pay you move to the next place and repeat from step 1 You repeat the whole process between 2 and 4 times during the evening. Rule nr 3: order straight away In Southern Spain, the tapas bars become crowded at around 8.30 – 9 pm. At this time, it becomes increasingly difficult to reach the counter and the plates are served […]

To eat and survive in Amsterdam

If you know me then this is no news that when it comes to travel, Fred organizes, I don’t. Despite some bumps on the road every now and then, I tend to improvise a lot, that’s my way. So when I decided to spend a couple of days in Amsterdam with some friends, you can easily imagine how professional and thought-through this was going to be. Scouting, gathering info, contacts?  Oh, come on! We’ll trust our instinct (and the wonderful collective memory). Because seriously, how wrong can you be these days with a bit of common sense and a data plan? To Amsterdam and through First thing to know if you plan on spending some time in Amsterdam: prefer the public transport. Parking your car in the city center is pretty difficult and costs an arm. Instead, use the « P+R » (which obviously enough means Park and Ride). If you do that, get a tramway ticket and validate it before leaving even if you don’t need to take the tram ! That way the 24 hours of car park will cost you only 1 EUR (plus the tram ticket of course) instead of 50 EUR. You’re welcome. We came from […]

The ultimate tapas guide

by Frédérique @ Yummy Planet

Standing in front of the chalkboard menu in a Spanish tapas bar, you’re tensed. You need to order, and fast. Otherwise you’ll face the wrath of the waiter. But what is the best choice? The list is huge and… written in Spanish. Don’t panic and read on! Yummy Planet is here to help you out of this situation. How we became experts ès tapas In May 2015, we spent 15 days in Andalusia and went on with a city-trip in Madrid. If you know a little bit about us, you won’t be surprised to learn we’ve tasted a lot of tapas during that time. Take a look at this video and you’ll see what I mean… Moreover, we tasted quite a lot of tapas in Barcelona, on a previous trip. What exactly are tapas? Tapas are small portions of food served with a glass of beer, wine or any other alcoholic drink in Spain. In fact, they can be anything as long as it’s edible. Still, there are some classics that you’ll find in almost any tapas bar in Spain. The ultimate tapas guide Because tapas can literally be any food, this list won’t cover everything you can find in Spain. But I’ll try […]

Discover Wales

While a lot of people think there’s only London or Scotland in the UK that are worth to spend your holidays at, why wouldn’t you try Wales? If you’re looking for a change instead of going every year in French Brittany, this may be the place you’re looking for! It is on my way to London in the Eurostar that I first wanted to discover Wales. I met this Welsh man so fond of his homeland that he spent the entire 2 hours ride filling my mind with all sorts of stories about the people, the landscapes and so on. I wonder… is there any Welsh person who’s not in love with Wales? A few months later here I am finally discovering Wales with Frédérique, some friends, and Pim’s (our dog). Having only one week to spend there we decided to focus on Pembrokeshire’s Coast path and Cardiff. This was the first time that I left the city streets since I decided to commit myself seriously to photography and I realized how difficult it […]

Som Tam: love at first bite

Exactly what I needed to cool my body and quench my thirst. A few minutes later, a smiling lady laid our order on the table, not without exclaiming enthusiastically […]

Pictures from South Africa: Zululand and Maputaland

by Frédérique @ Yummy Planet

After a great start in Cape Town’s area, we headed to the region north of Durban. We left urban landscapes behind us to enjoy the beauty of wildlife and splendid landscapes… Here is an overview of our experience there. Sleep under a tent in a private game park Imagine sleeping in a cozy tent in the middle of a private game park, waking up at dawn to watch gazelles and giraffes from your terrace while drinking a rooibos tea… This is all you need to fall in love with Africa. We spent 2 nights at the  Falaza Game Park & Spa where we could enjoy the wonderful scenery with all the comfort needed (and even more!). I almost convinced myself that I was in « Out of Africa ». Robert Redford was missing though. Absolute freedom sensation: galloping along the Indian ocean We booked our trip through an agency (Voyageurs du Monde) but still had the possibility to define our programme for certain days by ourselves. After searching the internet, I booked a 2,5 hour horse safari near St Lucia, a small town on the edge of Isimangaliso nature reserve. We rode near zebras, buffalos and hippos but what I enjoyed most was galloping […]
