Eating it Raw in the Largest Fish Market in South Korea – Jagalchi Market

by IFOTC @ Itchy Feet on the Cheap

Busan’s Jagalchi Market (자갈치시장), the largest fish market in South Korea, has taken up two very different places in my memory. The first one is a very positive place, where the memories of incredible lunches, lively atmospheres, excitement and intrigue all sit. The second place is dark. It’s usually avoided at all costs. This memory [...]

How to eat to your hearts content in Hoi An - Adventures of Soph

Adventures of Soph

Hoi An isn’t known for it’s culinary delights, but I sure want to put it on the food map for having some of the most scrumptious eats that I have had throughout my two weeks in Vietnam. I have listed my favourite places to dine and some whacky road stall snacks that deserve to be devoured in this blog and I know I shouldn’t have to tell you, but ENJOY!  The Hoi An Donut- You will be able to find these almost everywhere you go, just look out for a sweet little food cart on the side of the road- it’s almost given that they will sell these delightful treats. It’s exactly what you think, just a plain old donut coated in sugar. However… they deep fry the donut on the spot and I don’t know how, but it tastes so damn heavenly in your mouth. Simple done good.  Vi Café- Looks may be deceiving, but I can assure you this place serves up a good and big feed. Located on one of the busier roads in Hoi An, Vi Café is a double whammy – amazingly cheap and tasty food as well as the most welcoming and sweetest waitresses in Vietnam. We …

Soph’s travel diary: Hong Kong

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

Hong Kong is the true reason why you can’t judge a place by its cover or first impressions. I first went to Hong Kong when I was young and I mean reeeeal young. I was 7 years old and all I can remember was pretty much eating McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner to avoid accidently picking a meal that had shark, dog or some unknown animal part in it. Okay, that’s a bit of an overkill, but being young, naïve and chucking unnecessary tantrums, Hong Kong did not leave a positive impression on me. I went back again in 2010 on a school dancing trip before heading to the Macau International Dance Festival and you guessed it…I was not a fan for very similar reasons. So it seems crazy that out of all the places that I want to see the in the world, that I decided to head back to Hong Kong to give it another crack, third time lucky right? Why did I go back? My high school best friend, Sophie moved to Hong Kong in 2016 so the main incentive behind the trip was to catch up and explore her new home together. Unfortunately, I fell […]

The foodies guide to the Sunshine Coast

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

I am starting to feel like I can call myself a local to the Sunshine Coast and I love that. It’s a really cool, chilled out region that has got so much to offer – the cafe culture, health & fitness and just the general lifestyle rocks. I’ve created this little foodie guide to the coast to share my favourite spots with you so you too can have an incredible experience, whether you are holidaying here or are lucky to call yourself a local. This blog post will grow over the next few months as I will add in cafes, restaurants and bars as I go. If you have any recommendations, hit me up! I love checking out new places, trying new food and sharing it all with you guys. Mooloolaba CK Wholefoods: Cafe & Grocer A cafe and whole food grocer on Brisbane Rd. just as you come into Mooloolaba. If you are looking for a health fix this is the best spot on the coast for it. Soph’s Travel Diary: Roadtrip to Byron Bay

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

Ah Byron Bay, one of the most picturesque & trendiest spots along the East Coast of Australia. Actually, I take that back. Probably in the whole of Australia! It’s really hit the tourist radar in the last few years and I can totally see why. It’s got a whole lot on offer and there really is something for everyone – solo travellers in particular. I’ve only been to Byron Bay once before and that was for a day trip in 2015. So when I found out that my favourite travel blogger ‘Wheres’ Mollie’ was going to be holding a travellers meet up, I jumped on the opportunity to explore the area in more depth. I rostered three days off work and hit the road with Johannes – a German guy that I met on the Sunshine Coast, who also doubled as my photographer.  I had the most incredible 3 days in Northern NSW and am so excited to share with you some of the photographs I took. Day One: Brisbane to Byron Bay (2.5 hours driving) Day Two : Exploring Byron Bay & the surrounds Day Three: Byron Bay – Sunshine Coast (3.5 hours driving) I could have gone with […]

Destination Bucket List: Cairns

It seems ironic that I absolutely love Far North Queensland now that I have moved away from there. You see, I grew up in Cairns and it’s definitely fair to say that I took it all for granted and I’m sure I’m not the only one. It wasn’t until I ventured back there at the end of 2017 to show my best friends from England my home town that I fell in complete awe of the place. I hadn’t been back in three years, so the combination of having ultimate freedom & a whole lot of nostalgia paired with my best friends, made it one memorable week. Grub Food Van: the grooviest dining precinct in Melbourne

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

I’m a bit of a brunch enthusiast & have a very expensive addiction to eating out at groovy health focused cafes, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Melbourne is one of my favourite places. After all, it has got to be the foodie capital of Australia – everything is just so damn tasty. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s almost impossible to have a bad dining experience in Melbourne. This is a huge win for all those people that aren’t willing to do hours of research and wandering to find the perfect spot. For me, it’s just given me the incentive to find the foodie hotspots that are extraordinary and are truly stand outs from the rest. The grooviest dining precinct in Melbourne This leads me to Grub Food Van – an eclectic permanent coffee and food van in the hip suburb of Fitzroy. The guys at Grub Food Van have created an incredible dining precinct with outdoor picnic tables for those sunnier days and a larger seating area inside…inside being in a greenhouse. Yup, A CAFÉ IN A GREENHOUSE! How groovy is that?!? Oh how I love you Melbourne. Not only is it a cool place […]

It’s safe to say that there is a definitive divide between people who prefer sunrise over sunset and vice versa. You see, I’m considered one of those crazy people that enjoy waking up when everybody else is having a relationship with their pillow. Watching the sunrise gives me time to think about what I want to achieve and focus on for the day ahead and the added bonus is that I get to watch it over the ocean – the perks of being a Queenslander. As well as it being absolutely mind-blowing (and obviously the best part of the day), it’s almost always guaranteed that there will be less people watching the sunrise than people watching the sunset. It feels so special to be in the minority, let alone have a spot to yourself! Being a true sunrise fan, I decided two years ago that I would wake up every day for one week and watch the day begin. As I now live just a 3-minute drive to the beach and have access to a car, I figured that it would be a brilliant time to tick it off the bucket list. I will admit, doing this in the Australian […]

2017: The year of courage & learning to love myself again

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

It’s crazy to even think that 2017 has come and gone already. Every year that passes seems to fly by quicker than the last. I have spent a lot of time over the last few days reflecting on the year that’s been and to say that it’s tugged on the heart strings is a huge understatement. The year started off with a typical Sophie moment – quitting my job to channel my happiness and longing for adventure. I jetted off to South East Asia for a month just a week after leaving my job at Flight Centre. It was definitely a top way to start the year off. But when I got back from my travels, everything settled back in and came crashing down before I could even try to fix things. Up until July, I was fighting my own battle with depression. When I was packing up my stuff to move, I read through my journal that I had kept from the first few months. It was so scary to read through and see how unwell I was. I’m so happy to say that I found the light at the end of the tunnel and it was a damn […]

Soph’s Travel Diary: Climbing Mt. Ngungun

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

I am starting to get into more of a routine on the coast now that I am hitting the two month mark since moving. Monday’s have now become my time for adventures and thankfully enough, so has it for my new roomie – Tess. This Monday took us out to the Glasshouse mountains to go climb Mt. Ngungun for the sunset. We were inspired by the beautiful sunset we witnessed driving home on the Sunday and had a good feeling that it was going to be just as incredible (spoiler alert: it was). I’ve only done the climb once before and that was for sunrise so I was super keen to see how it compared. The walk up through the bushes was absolutely stunning – the light was so bright and golden. The first half almost looked too good to be true. By the time we got to the top, we had about 30 minutes until the sun went down. We utilised this time to snap some photographs and take it all in. The view from the top is remarkable and it really hit home that this is now where I live. I have to keep pinching myself everyday that […]

The ultimate 3 week Sri Lankan travel itinerary

In July 2017 I spent a month exploring the beaches, temples and mountains in Sri Lanka– I had the best time and saw some absolutely amazing places. I feel as though I had an amazing itinerary and would love to share it with you! Before October, the best way to get to Sri Lanka took us three flights, 20 hours and an unexpected stopover in Bali, which we only found out about when we were actually descending into Bali. I don’t mind all too much about long distance travel and going the longer route to save money but now thanks to Sri Lankan airlines, you can fly DIRECT from Melbourne to Colombo. I know that my itinerary is pretty top notch so I am here to share my 3 week Sri Lanka itinerary so you can best utilise your time and get the most out of your travels. This is one busy city with markets packed into unimaginable tiny spaces and a local to westerner ratio that’ll have you straight out of your comfort zone. The 2018 travel hotspot revealed

Backpackers, nature lovers and foodies rejoice – because I have a hot new contender for the best travel destination for not only 2018, but of all time. So fuel your wanderlust and book that first flight of the year to the land of endless tea plantations and palm tree dotted beaches. I am certain that you’ll be as hooked as I was. Sri Lankan food is healthy, fresh and so DAMN TASTY. I find myself rating each destination that I travel to based on how much I enjoy the food. Alike most people, I usually get to the two-week mark when I start to crave a home cooked meal and a gigantic green smoothie. Although this was not the case with Sri Lankan food.
