The Best Things I Ate at Chicago Gourmet

The Best Things I Ate at Chicago Gourmet

by Stephanie Levinson @ Dash of Adventure

This post is a bit delayed but I did want to share some of the amazing things I ate this year at Chicago’s biggest food event of the year, Chicago Gourmet. For the 10th anniversary Bon Appetit really went all out with 10 total food events over Chicago Gourmet week including a Farm to Table dinner on the 606 with a meal cooked by Chicago celebrity chef Chef Rick Bayless.

This indulgent event also gives back, during Chicago Gourmet an online auction is hosted by The Illinois Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and 100% of the proceeds from the online auction and raffles go towards providing scholarships for aspiring chefs and hospitality professionals.

The highlight every year for me though is the amazing gourmet pavilions. This year there were 12 pavilions all running simultaneously which made picking and choose which ones to stand in line for a hard decision. On top of that, many restaurant groups also had their own tents and were serving favorite menu items there as well.

So without further ado feast your eyes on my favorite Chicago Gourmet dishes this year!

New Zealand SOUTH ISLAND Travel Budget || Breakdown of what I spent in 4.5 weeks

by thewildlife @ The Wild Life | Travel & Vegan Food Blog

After five weeks exploring New Zealand’s North Island, it was time for us to head South! I continued to make a note of everything I spent money on, so I could see just how much our travels through New Zealand cost. We were still travelling and living in Cecil, our trusty campervan, as we drove from Picton to Queenstown. We spent 31 days travelling through Nelson, Marlborough, Abel Tasman, Kaikoura, Christchurch, Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, Wanaka, Franz Josef, Twizel, Omarama, Arrowtown, Glenorchy, Milford Sound, Hokitika, Greymouth and Queenstown. EXPENDITURES: ACTIVITIES – $38.32 per day **Although there were two of us travelling, all prices below are what I spent, so are PER PERSON!** As with the North Island, activities were our main source of outgoings. I spent $505 in the North Island plus $529 on a skydive, totalling $1034. We spent a little more on the South Island – $1188.20. Some of the biggest spends included a dolphin trip in Kaikoura, a stargazing trip in Lake Tekapo, a boat trip on Milford Sound and kayaking at Abel Tasman. The biggest spend by far was our Franz Josef glacier hike which was $449 out of the $1188.20 total, but totally worth every penny! […]

Vegan Options in Auckland || The Best Vegan Restaurants, Cafes and Shops!

by thewildlife @ The Wild Life | Travel & Vegan Food Blog

Auckland was my first stop in New Zealand and also the one where I enjoyed the most vegan food! Covering a huuuge area, you can find over 100 places serving vegan and vegetarian food options. I did my best on my tight budget to try as many places as possible, but also did a lot of research to see which places were the most highly rated! Here’s my list of the best vegan options in Auckland….. RESTAURANTS / CAFES Burgerie Up first is one of the best burgers I’ve ever had! If you are craving a BIG fast food fix, Burgerie’s Tower Burger is for you! Loaded with a ‘beef’ patty, mushroom, hash brown, ham/  bacon slice, tomato, lettuce and smashed avocado. It’s not a restaurant, but more of a hole-in-the-wall joint and does serve meat as well. However, the owner is passionate about creating vegan options, understands veganism and has an extensive menu that is forever expanding. Green Time Everything at Green Time is homemade, with a strong focus on grow-your-own, environmentally friendly ingredients and a zero waste mentality. The menu is 100% vegan and is a fusion of Mexican and Asian inspired dishes such as the Sexi Mexi burger, BBQ pulled pork sliders and […]

FREEDOM CAMPING IN NEW ZEALAND EXPLAINED || Self-Contained Vs Non Self-Contained Vehicles

by thewildlife @ The Wild Life | Travel & Vegan Food Blog

We’d heard the terms ‘Freedom Camping’ and ‘Self-Contained’ thrown around in articles we’d read before arriving in New Zealand, but didn’t have much of an idea as to what it really meant. When we decided to purchase a campervan to travel and live in, we did a lot of research. We looked into what kind of van we needed and where we would be allowed to camp. There was no easy-to-read article anywhere online, so I’ve put this post together as a useful resource for anyone wanting to travel around New Zealand in a car or campervan. Self-Contained vs Non Self-Contained This is something that you’ll become aware of when looking to purchase a campervan. Some vehicles will be advertised as ‘self-contained’ and are usually quite a bit more expensive than their non self-contained equivalent. This is because being self-contained earns the inhabitants the right to park in lots of places, free of charge. Therefore, you can easily save back the extra money within the first few weeks as you won’t be paying out $10-40 per night for campsites or hostels. In order to be certified as ‘self-contained’, the vehicle needs to be inspected by a registered company with the right to grant […]

Eleventh Annual LuxeHome CHILL Makes Real Charitable Impact

Eleventh Annual LuxeHome CHILL Makes Real Charitable Impact

by Stephanie Levinson @ Dash of Adventure

After traveling and witnessing firsthand the level of poverty a huge population of the world lives in, it became difficult for me to attend luxurious events when I knew at the end of the night so much food was going to be thrown out while so many people were hungry elsewhere. I’ve been trying to be conscious about choosing to attend the kinds of events that are tied to a charity or non-profit organization and are truly doing good deeds for those not as fortunate.   One of my favorite food events of the year has raised nearly 1 million dollars since 2007 to support Chicago area charitable organizations: the Lynn Sage Foundation, Respiratory Health Organization and Saturday Place. I’ve attended the event in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016 and each year is better than the next!   This year on November 9 nearly 50 restaurants and dozens of premium wine and spirits companies are participating in partnership with Wine Spectator Magazine in the amazing LuxeHome space in the Merchandise Mart. LuxeHome is the world’s largest collection of premier boutiques for home building and renovation with 30 different boutiques all in one location. This event always gives me great decorating and interior design ideas for my apartment and future home. Haven’t you always wanted to sip an expensive Pinot Grigio while lounging on a marble tub?

THE TIPSY VEGAN || Review of Norwich’s New Vegan Restaurant & Cocktail Bar

by thewildlife @ The Wild Life | Travel & Vegan Food Blog

Yep, you read that right! A brand new addition to Norwich’s ever-growing list of vegan eateries… and this time it involves cocktails! The lovely ladies at the Bia Kitchen had such a great reaction to their market stall that they have stepped it up a notch, opening their own permanent place on St Benedict’s street. This new cocktail bar and restaurant ‘The Tipsy Vegan‘ serves up a different menu to their popular diner classics found on their market stall, alongside a very fancy, bespoke range of cocktails designed by Knowhere Special. I’m talking ‘House-Infused Beetroot Gin, Activated Charcoal, Mint, Lemon and Ginger Beer’ kinda fancy….   I was lucky enough to be in Norwich the day they opened to the public and didn’t think twice about booking myself in for dinner. On arriving, me and my sister (also vegan) were greeted with a super friendly welcome and shown to our seat. The place features a small ‘dining’ area with tables, a more laid back ‘drinking’ area and a couple of extra tables near the bar. We were seated in the dining area and immediately scanned the menu to see what we wanted to order. Luckily we have very similar tastes, so both […]

TOP TIPS FOR BUYING A CAMPERVAN IN NEW ZEALAND || INCLUDING PDF GUIDE!

by thewildlife @ The Wild Life | Travel & Vegan Food Blog

When planning our trip to New Zealand, we knew we wanted to explore the country’s epic scenery by campervan. We’d heard so many people say it was the best thing they’d ever done and how you just don’t get the same experiences travelling by bus. Three months in and we totally agree! We can’t imagine travelling by public transport, now we’ve experienced the freedom of living in a van. If you decide that’s how you’d like to see New Zealand, you then face the decision of whether to hire a campervan or buy one. After looking at the extortionate prices for hiring, we decided we’d be better off buying our own. It actually worked out cheaper! It was our first time purchasing a campervan, so we did a lot of research and ended up with a great van. I thought I’d put this post together to help anyone looking to buy a campervan  (or any other vehicle) in New Zealand – you won’t regret it! 🙂 TOP TIPS FOR BUYING A CAMPERVAN IN NEW ZEALAND Give yourself at least two weeks to find the perfect van. You can look at ads online for before arriving and could even book in some viewings, but you […]

Rehab Queenstown || A Small Company with a Big Vision for the Future!

by thewildlife @ The Wild Life | Travel & Vegan Food Blog

Situated on New Zealand’s South Island, Queenstown is well-known for being the ‘adventure capital of the world’. With so many opportunities to take part in throwing yourself off something high in one way or another, it’s definitely an adventure-seeker’s paradise. Add four ski fields, a bunch of bars and a tonne of hospo jobs into the mix and you can see why so many travellers never leave! With so many bars, clubs and restaurants, it’s easy to gorge yourself on beer and fast food (I’m looking at you, $5 Dominoes). If you are feeling a little rough the morning after, there is one place in town that can be sure to reinvigorate you with some nutritional healing. As I do with every new place, I researched what vegan options Queenstown had to offer. I found there were no 100% vegan or vegetarian places, but a couple of vegan-friendly restaurants that offered dairy and meat free choices. One place in particular caught my attention for offering the most vegan options and healthier alternatives, so one lunch time I headed down to Rehab. Although not vegan or vegetarian due to offering meals containing eggs, chicken and salmon, Rehab undoubtedly understands veganism and […]

Guilt-Free Elotes

Guilt-Free Elotes

by Stephanie Levinson @ Dash of Adventure

Elotes are one of my favorite Mexican side dishes and the perfect way to use up a bunch of corn on the cob. The first time I had the dish was several years ago on a trip to Mexico during a beach BBQ that our resort threw for dinner one night. Sweet, savory and a little bit spicy, I couldn't believe I'd never had this magical combination before. Usually prepared with mayonnaise and cotija cheese, it isn't the healthiest dish, so I set out to find a way to make this a guilt-free side dish in our regular weeknight meal rotation. The recipe serves four but is easily scaled up or down for a couple or a crowd.

Ingredients:

  • 4 ears of corn
  • 1 cup of Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup of cilantro
  • 1/2 cup diced red onion
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Directions:

  1. Shuck the corn by removing the husk and all corn hairs
  2. Grill corn on medium heat for 15 minutes, rotating occasionally to cook all sides
  3. Dice up half a medium red onion (half-cup) and chop up cilantro
  4. Place corn, one ear at a time, in a bowl and shave off kernels with knife
  5. Add all ingredients to bowl with the corn
  6. Stir and serve!

Brunch at The Origin in Christchurch || AMAZING Vegan Pancakes and some fancy Tea!

by thewildlife @ The Wild Life | Travel & Vegan Food Blog

Christchurch has over twenty veggie friendly cafes and restaurants but only one with a 100% vegan menu. Based in St Albans, a fifteen minute walk outside of the city centre, The Origin promotes itself as somewhere people can come to relax and enjoy delicious (rather fancy) tea or coffee and a healthy, ‘pure’ meal. This means no meat, eggs, dairy, garlic or onion. Due to advertising themselves as a heathy eatery rather than using the term ‘vegan’, The Origin has previously been described as Christchurch’s secret vegan restaurant! I went along for brunch one morning and immediately loved how open the place felt as I walked inside. Some of the seating curves around to the right, away from the bar, which offers up some great spots to get cosy with a good book and a steaming pot of tea! Everything is very white and minimalistic yet they still manage to achieve a cosy and relaxed vibe which I really enjoyed. They also offer free (decent) wifi which is a big bonus as so many places in New Zealand don’t! They have a small breakfast menu made up of four completely house-made dishes; muesli, porridge, pancakes and scrambled tofu. For lunch, choices include a […]

My Favorite Bites from LuxeHome CHILL and Spain’s Great Match

My Favorite Bites from LuxeHome CHILL and Spain’s Great Match

by Stephanie Levinson @ Dash of Adventure

Right before the holidays this year I had a chance to attend two tasty food events in the city, LuxeHome CHILL and Spain’s Great Match. As you know I’m not attending as many food events these days, but both of these had a super appealing list of wines and restaurant pairings that I wasn’t about to pass up. It also helped that Spain’s Great Match was occurring right before our travels to Spain and was the perfect event to get us ramped up for two weeks of Spanish wine and food.

New Zealand NORTH ISLAND Travel Budget || Breakdown of what I spent in 5 weeks

by thewildlife @ The Wild Life | Travel & Vegan Food Blog

We spent five weeks (34 days) exploring New Zealand’s North Island and documented everything I spent along the way! After landing in Auckland, we bought a campervan and travelled up to Cape Reinga, back down and around to Hamilton and the Coromandel and then down the coast to Tauranga. We also visited Rotorua, Taupo, Hobbiton and Fielding before finishing our North Island travels in Wellington. The budget doesn’t include the two weeks we spent living in Auckland, looking for the campervan – it starts from our first day on the road. Looking for my budget for the South Island? The map below shows some of the main areas we visited: EXPENDITURES: ACTIVITIES – $14.85 per day **Although there were two of us travelling, all prices below are what I spent, so are PER PERSON!** As New Zealand is known for being one of the most adventurous countries in the world, it’s not surprising that activities were our main source of spending. I’d never done a skydive before, so when in Taupo, I went for the full package, complete with photos and video. This set me back $529 – nearly a quarter of my total spend! Excluding the skydive, the rest of the North Island activities (entry […]

A few months ago now, we bought our first campervan (lovely Cecil) in Auckland. We had a great time travelling all over the country, experiencing van life for the first time! We did a lot of research before buying the van and even put together a list of things to look out for and what to avoid. This list also included questions to ask the seller, to learn more about the vehicle and its history. It was extremely useful for us when we were buying Cecil, so I thought I’d share this pre-purchase checklist with you guys! I’ve summarised everything in this post, but for a more comprehensive & printable PDF guide:  >> ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BUYING A CAR OR CAMPERVAN IN NEW ZEALAND (PDF) << PRE-PURCHASE CHECKLIST FOR BUYING A CAMPERVAN OUTSIDE THE CAR *Check for obvious signs of damage.
