by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

Focusing on delivering local delights in a casual dining concept, we were always caught by surprised with the packed restaurant, and even spotting a queue during the peak dining hours. From Curry Chicken, to Curry Fish, or Assam Fish, you can also pick from either of the popular mains from their menu, including Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak and local noodle options. Basically, this is a coffee-shop, just all condensed into one central kitchen. How did they fare though? First up, we ordered their signature Curry Chicken with Prata (S$8.50) and paired it with an additional order of an Egg Prata (S$2). More lemak than spicy, the curry is [...]

Food Review: The Chinese Kitchen (厨神私房菜) at Cavan Road | Private Kitchen Concept by Chef Austen Ong in Lavender

Food Review: The Chinese Kitchen (厨神私房菜) at Cavan Road | Private Kitchen Concept by Chef Austen Ong in Lavender

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place Located in Lavender along Cavan Road, The Chinese Kitchen is a relatively new dining concept to open in this enclave. I was expecting a traditional looking Chinese restaurant, to which I was surprised that the space is so modern. The interior is somewhat incongruent for a typical Chinese restaurant – high ceiling, industrial finishings like the raw brick walls and bulbs and cement lookalike floor. Helmed by Chef Austen Ong who is renowned in the Chinese culinary world in Singapore, the restaurant runs like a private kitchen with no corkage fees. The Food The dishes here are all curated by Chef Austen himself, with an emphasis on techniques and ingredients from the days of the 50s and 60s. Some starters to kickoff our meal were the Organic Orka, Pickle Chilli (S$8), Crosby Baby Squid & Pomelo Salad (S$10) and Pork Trotter Jelly, Passionfruit Infused Cucumber (S$10). The pork trotter jelly is a Teochew delicacy, where the pork is encased in soft gelatine cubes along with chilled cucumber slices, finished off with a drizzled of passion fruit sauce. The Charcoal Grilled Orange Sea Perch with Sea Salt & Spices (S$62) is delicious. The New Zealand fish was very fresh, [...]

Food Review: The Tastemaker Store at Havelock Road | Cosy Cafe at Beo Crescent Market

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place Cafes at the void decks of old neighbourhoods have been trending the past years, which is definitely a good sign as it injects more vibrancy in these estates. I finally found the chance to visit The Tastemaker Store at Havelock Road, a modern café with a clean vibe at the void deck of an old estate. My first impression of the café was: Did I just enter a Muji store? The wooden tables and neat setting of the café coupled with some retro elements such as the beige tiles at the counter create a rather comfy and chill-lax ambience, totally a perfect spot to enjoy some good food and drink. The Food The offerings here are a mix of Asian and Western, from the likes of Kaya Toast to Ham and Cheese Sandwich and Pizza. New additions are added periodically, as we spotted Curry Chicken on our last visit. I ditched the usual cafe latte by going for the Matcha Latte ($5) instead, which had a nice matcha aroma and taste. The sweetness was just right as well even though there was not much latte art to speak of. The Lemoncurd Toast with clotted cream ($3) on the menu [...]

Located at 47 Amoy Street, the two weeks old Kimme restaurant is a modern, 48-seat Asian concept which takes up the entire 3-storey shophouse. The restaurant is the brainchild of Chef Sun Kim, the chef behind Meta and is helmed by Head Chef Louis Han who has worked with Chef Sun closely the past few years. The inspiration for the restaurant’s name comes from Chef Sun Kim, where his friends used to address him Kimme affectionately. [Read more here…] Address: 47 Amoy Street, Singapore 069873 The Meat Market There is finally a hip dining spot in Hougang, or even in the North-East of Singapore. Meet Meat Market located at Hougang One, a casual meat concept which serves grilled meats over different types of wood on different months. The concept reminds me of Red Eye Smokehouse at Lavender, except that the space at Meat Market is more cluttered with more dining tables, with an open kitchen concept where you can actually watch all the action behind the kitchen. The interior is quite cosy and simple, decorated [...]

However, the truth is, it could be the things your subconscious mind hears when you are trying to relax and sleep. Your partner snoring throughout the night or cars driving by outside could be causing more issues than you realize. That is

The inspiration for the restaurant’s name comes from Chef Sun Kim, where his friends used to address him Kimme affectionately. My first impression of the space is the huge slab of white marble communal table with the open kitchen behind where you can watch the chefs perform magic to the plates. The space at level one is not huge yet it feels spacious, all thanks to the clever design of using ceiling mirrors to create a bigger sense of space. If you prefer a more private space, level two is a more intimate ambience for couples and some quiet moments, whereas level three is an attic space with only one table [...]

Food Review: Newly Revamped Hua Ting Restaurant reopens at Orchard Hotel Singapore | Tea-Pairing Degustation Menu worthy of a Michelin Star?

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place If you are a traditionalist at heart when it comes to Cantonese cuisine, you should have heard of Hua Ting Restaurant at Orchard Hotel Singapore. Opened since 1992, the Cantonese restaurant reopened recently after a three months hiatus as the restaurant went through a major revamp. I visited Hua Ting few years back and was pleasantly surprised by the restaurant’s transformation. The corridors are more spacious, and I love the wooden wall panels which add modern touches to complement other oriental aspects of the interior. There are 3 semi-private areas, 7 Private Rooms, a main dining room and an ultra luxe private Chairman’s room which can fit 20 pax. The Food Hua Ting is still helmed by Masterchef Lap Fai, who has been with the restaurant for over a decade. With the reopening of the restaurant, it has also introduced a unique tea pairing experience with its Hua Ting Tea Degustation Menu (S$98++ per person). We started with a trio of appetiser of Chilled Crab with Long Jing, Prawn with Oolong and Smoked Duck with Pu Erh. My favourite here is the Smoked Duck, infused with the right dose of Pu Erh tea to set the tone for [...]

Food Review: Cottontail Creamery at Serangoon | Taiwanese opens Gelato cafe minutes from Serangoon’s Nex

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place Located minutes walk from Serangoon’s Nex, Cottontail Creamery opened late last year, helping to plug a gap for a credible after-meal dessert cafe in the northeast. I am surprised to find that the owners are in fact Taiwanese, although their usual exemplary service standards did not rub off on their staff as with the less-than encouraging comments we have heard of the staffs’ service attitude. It is a fairly large space for a neighbourhood cafe, taking up two units along the ground level of a HDB block. We noticed how the owners paid close attention to the decor, keeping to an extended-kitchen theme, with greenery all-round. There are also plenty of couple tables, with a large communal table at the end, catering to groups of varying sizes. The Food It is an affair with gelato for now, though brunch food will be introduced at a later date this year. Some of the interesting flavors we spotted during our visit include Extra Virgin Olive Oil & Blackcurrant, Mont Blanc Chestnut and Passion Fruit Meringue, with adolescent-unsuitable but grown-up-most-loved Craft Beer IPA gelato! Since it was our first visit, we went for our personal favourites (read: safe) including Uji Matcha with Honey and Russian [...]

Food Review: Majestic Restaurant at Downtown’s Marina One | Former New Majestic Hotel Cantonese Restaurant reopens

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place Located at Marine One, Majestic Restaurant should be a familiar name to many, though most people would probably still associate it with the now defunct New Majestic Hotel at Bukit Pasoh Road. After a hiatus of six months, the contemporary Cantonese restaurant has reopened at the brand new Marine One mixed development at the East Tower. Located at level 4 in a unique dome structure, Majestic’s new location mirrors that of New Zealand steakhouse Wakanui at the West Tower as the two anchor restaurants in this development. The main dining area offers a view of the lush and luxe Marine One, with plenty of natural light in the day, Italian stucco walls and dark wood floors. A nostalgic touch within the restaurant is the historic signboard of the New Majestic Hotel hanged beside the kitchen. If you need a private space, the restaurant also have a few private dining rooms. I heard that the restaurant only accepts reservations at the moment, so do call ahead to reserve. The Food One main difference from the old Majestic Restaurant is that dim sum is finally served on the menu at Marine One. Some dim sum to start are the Spinach [...]

Food Review: Matcha One at Taipei, Taiwan | One of the Best Matcha Cafes in Zhongxiao Fuxing Taipei!

The Place If you only have space for one Matcha cafe to check out in Taipei, Matcha One is our top pick. There is also another branch along Yong Kang Street. The Food The range of matcha desserts are wide, from Mille crepe cake to matcha waffles and matcha roll. Using mainly Uji matcha, the Matcha mille crepe (NT$195) has a rich dose of matcha yet not overly sweet for our low tolerance sugar levels. If you love Matcha, the desserts are Matcha One are delicious. Using mainly premium Uji Matcha with a Japanese zen-like space, the ex-financial sector owner sticks to the strong principle of serving high quality and authentic Japanese matcha desserts. We enjoyed this Matcha mille crepe which has a rich dose of matcha yet not overly sweet for our low tolerance sugar levels. Likewise, you can’t go very wrong with a serving of the Matcha soft ice cream (NT$90). Rants Prices are on the high side by cafe standards in Taipei. Will I Return Again? We really love the zen space [...]

Food Review: Kenny’s Krabbi at Tai Thong Crescent | Casual Crab-centric restaurant in Potong Pasir

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place Located the The Venue Shoppes along Tai Thong Crescent in Potong Pasir, the few weeks old Kenny’s Krabbi is a casual restaurant with a focus on crab dishes. The restaurant is just a few doors away from one of our favourite beef noodles, the Original Orchard Emerald Beef Noodle. The casual and small space is able to accommodate less than 50 people. The Food The price range is huge, and goes from S$6.90 for Sliced Fish Soup all the way to S$68 for the Braised Crab Bee Hoon (800g). Other than a series of crabby dishes like the Rich Broth Crab Bee Hoon and Singapore Chilli Crab, there are also options like Seafood Crispy Noodles (S$8.90) and Seafood Hor Fun (S$8.90). We started with some sides like the Homemade Crabmeat Roll (S$6.90) and Signature Braised Pork Belly with Leaf Bun (S$3). The crabmeat roll is akin to Ngo Hiang, which is quite delicious. For mains, we had the Rich Broth Crab Bee Hoon 600g Crab (S$20/half portion). While the crab is quite fresh, I find the broth to be a tad diluted as I was expecting a much richer flavour. Similarly, the broth of the Sliced Fish Soup [...]

Food Review: The Summerhouse at Seletar Aerospace Park | The Most Dreamy and Beautiful Garden Dome Dining in Singapore

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place There is a serious lack of good restaurants in the North-East of Singapore, and the best thing which happened in terms of dining scene over the past one year is Seletar Aerospace Park. The Summerhouse is one of the most prominent dining destination in this JTC development, which I re-visited recently again after my visit to Wildseed Cafe last year. The most notable change is the newly introduced The Summerhouse Garden Domes, with 3 distinct interior themes of Bohemian, Scandinavian and Lounge, all fully air-conditioned, complete with own music sound system set amidst the lush garden. I must say that the whole garden dome concept feels so dreamy and unique that it is probably one of its kind in Singapore. The domes can accommodate up to 8 diners, though there is a minimum spend of S$300++ per dome booking. Well, fairy tale dining does come at a price.   Other than the 3 new garden domes, The Summerhouse Dining Room now features an air-conditioned veranda overlooking the trees, which definitely makes the dining experience more comfortable on a warm day. Guests can choose from the dinner menu from The Summerhouse Dining Room at S$300++ per couple, and S$150++ per [...]

Food Review: Beauty in the Pot opens Third and Largest outlet in Singapore | Pretty Pink Interior Theme at OneKM Mall (again)!

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place After opening two outlets at OneKM Mall and The Centrepoint, one of the most popular hotpot restaurants in Singapore Beauty in the Pot opened its third and largest outlet just a week ago. Coincidentally, the newest outlet of the perpetually packed steamboat restaurant is also located at OneKM Mall, on Level 3 with a very spacious size of over 7,600 square feet and 288 seats. The first thing I notice about the newest outlet is the predominantly pink interior. The interior such as the walls and ceiling take reference from cherry blossoms during spring season, while the restaurant’s flooring features white marble stippled with pink quartz. This feels like a new outlet specially designed for the ladies! In addition, there are also private rooms available with individual pots, which reminds me of the concept at Paradise Hotpot in Compass One. The other ambitious plan in the pipeline is a children’s playground at the outdoor area. The Food The main difference for this outlet (other than its ridiculously pink interior) as opposed to the one on level 2 in the same mall is that it will serve six soup bases, similar to The Centrepoint’s outlet, including the Beauty Collagen Broth (Shark’s Cartilage [...]
