Thailand in Review: Even the 'bad' food is good

by Jannell Lo @ My BF is GF - Travel - My BF is GF

There is no such thing as ‘bad’ food in Thailand. While it's true that there are both tourist-Thai and local-Thai restaurants, even the tourist ones serve up pretty exceptional food. One week into our trip and we were still expecting disappointment every time we opted for a sit down meal rather than a take-away local meal from a market, but every time we were shocked by the results. Whether we ordered pandan-wrapped fried chicken, a classic curry, or some cashew chicken cooked on an open fire, there was no such thing as a bad meal.

Cooking Class Review: We's Kitchen

by Jannell Lo @ My BF is GF - Travel - My BF is GF

We’s class is a sneak peak into the lesser known Northern Thai cuisine. Northern Thai food is heartier, more rustic, and packed full of herbs. If you know what you want to learn, you can customize 3-4 dishes for her to teach. If you don’t have suggestions, she can either design a menu to showcase Northern classics, or she can teach you some classics like panang or massaman curry, pad thai, or whatever else you can dream up! As it was private, it cost more than other classes, but was still a reasonable price for North American standards.

This class is indicative of what you'll find across Cambodia: a good introduction to accessible Khmer food at a very reasonable price. All of the menu items are very Western-palate-friendly, the kitchen is clean, and the instruction is good. The available menu, however, is not unique to this class. It features the same 5-10 options found around the country, though they are done quite well here.

Malay Cuisine: Food in Penang and Kuala Lumpur

by pvrouvas @ The Only Pete | Travel & Technology Blog

I know for a fact that I had never tasted nor wondered what Malay food was like until I showed up in Malaysia. After a few weeks and dozens of meals in the country, I’m still not 100% sure what Malay food really is. Why? The food in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and throughout the country, as well as the population, is a mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian. Between the Chinese noodle soups and Indian curry dishes, both of which are local styles, it’s pretty difficult to distinguish what is solely Malay. Even though I couldn’t pick it out of

So, what will backpacking in Laos cost be per day? Per week? How much should you budget for travel in Laos? What should your budget look like for hostels? I will answer all of these below so you can budget for your upcoming trip to Laos . Best of 2017 – Our Food and Travel Favorites

by Daryl & Mindi Hirsch @ 2foodtrippers

2017 was a busy year for the 2foodtrippers. We traveled to three continents, 13 countries and too many cities to count. Check out the food and travel experiences that were our best of 2017. We began the year 2017 without definite plans. Perhaps we could plan our calendar way in advance as some ‘type A’ people probably do, but what’s the fun in that? Sometimes, we’re just hanging around our Naples, Italy apartment and, all of a sudden, the spark of travel shoots across our brains and, on a whim, we ...

Cooking Class Review: Kangaroo Restaurant

by Jannell Lo @ My BF is GF - Travel - My BF is GF

Kangaroo class is exactly the type of class that we typically try to avoid: it caters to larger groups, it has a set menu of tourist favourites and it came recommended by our hotel. However, we found ourselves liking the class much more than we expected and we think you might too! The focus is on very Hue-centric food, which you aren’t likely to learn about in other parts of Vietnam and the instruction is very clear. Give it a go if you’re passing through Hue! If you’re as lucky as we were, you might even get the class to yourself.

The people behind Hanoi Cooking Centre not only know Vietnamese food, they also know Western palates and pantries. The instruction is very clear, with great demonstrations and lots of hands on time. The biggest drawback in our course was that we didn't get to personally grill our food, but it by no means ruined the experience. The classes at Hanoi Cooking Centre are a great way to learn how to cook the food that regular Vietnamese people eat both at home and on the streets.

Eating in the Food Capital of Malaysia – George Town, Penang

Leaving Southern Thailand behind, the journey to Malaysia involved an overnight ferry, four different mini-vans, and the most unorganized customs/border service I experienced in Southeast Asia. And that’s saying a lot considering the tourist swindling operations at the Laos border. In the customs office, the border officials requested our immunizations card, something the United States does not provide. After denying their request, we let them take our temperatures and they asked us if we had the Zika virus – of course we all replied that we did not. After sitting in the office for 45 minutes while they copied our information by hand

Out of the 14,000+ islands in Indonesia, we only made it to the widely beloved Bali (which we had to see for ourselves) and its neighbouring island of Java. But even with our very surface experience, it was evident that Indonesia is home to an incredible amount of diversity - just not in the sense that we’re used to back home. There aren’t a lot of immigrants here, there isn’t a ton of international food, but there are migrants within the islands and there is a wealth of regional food that gets transferred throughout the country.

Why “Nguyễn” is the most popular surname of Vietnamese?

by Thu Ngo Vu @ Beebee

According to World Geography, the surname ‘Nguyễn’ ranks the fourth most popular one in the world. In Vietnam, it makes up 38,4% of Vietnam’s population and undoubtedly becomes a common identity signal for Vietnamese people on the international stage. Why it is so popular? The answer lies in the history of Vietnam. For hundreds of years, ancient China’s disorder society made a part of ‘Nguyễn’ family migrate to Vietnam. In 1232, after the Ly Dynasty was usurped, Tran Thu Do forced descendants of the Ly family to change their surname into ‘Nguyễn’. In 1407, the Ho Dynasty collapsed, his descendants...

Vietnam in Review: Masters of One

by Jannell Lo @ My BF is GF - Travel - My BF is GF

The food scene in Vietnam is all about the masters of one - restaurants named after one dish, serving one dish. You’ll find places with “Bun Cha,” “Pho,” or “Bun Bo Nam Bo” in their name, and the only options you have are whether your Bun Cha comes with or without spring rolls, whether your Pho has rare or well done beef, whether you want Bun Bo Nam Bo or nothing. The only way for these people to stay in business is to make their one dish really well, so you can feel confident that you’re going to get an excellent meal.

Do New Point-of-Sale Technologies Make Workers Hate Me?

For the past several years, the use of new point-of-sales (POS) technologies, like Square, that use a touchscreen have become popular among businesses. One reason shop owners love these systems, I assume, is that they increase tips. After the cashier swipes your card, they flip the screen around to face you and you see a screen that looks like this: Before these systems, a customer would have
