Seems like Vietnamese cuisine in creeping into popularity in Singapore, with Nam Nam Noodle Bar and shops at Joo Chiat such as Long Phung leading the pack. Need more pho? In a manner of months, more and more small outlets such as Saigon Lotus (Marina Square), Wrap & Roll (The Star & Ion Orchard), So Pho (JEM), Sen Bar & Restaurant (Geylang Road), Pho Hanoi (Serangoon North Ave 1), Saigon Vietnamese Delicacy (Geylang Road) are sprouting all over the island. I needed dinner at Marina Square’s Dining Edition, and was ‘attracted’ to a gaudy orange, yellow, red, and yellow colour-schemed Saigon Lotus, opened by a Vietnamese-Australian owner who has been in Singapore for 4 years. (Okay, another reason why I chose there was because the other restaurants were crowded and this was empty.) Compared with some of the more contemporary snazzier looking counterparts, Saigon Lotus’s décor, menu and waitresses’ uniform all had this rather olden back-to-the-past take, and does feel I am transported back to Ho Chi Minh city. The set meal of 1 entrée, a bowl of noodles and drink at $18.30 nett is rather wallet-friendly considering this is within a shopping mall. Traditional Vietnamese drip coffee, yes! I was not expecting much due to some previous disappointments at local Vietnamese restaurants, but Saigon Lotus’s Sliced Beef Pho was a generous portion of gratifying comforting bowl of soup noodles that could almost match up to those I tried at Vietnam. The beef remained tender and not over-cooked, and the broth was light and satisfying with an authentic touch. The pho is not the best, but good enough for me when I am not fussy. The melonpan with ice cream, a Japanese sweet bun, reminded me of our popular local street food: Ice Cream Sandwich. The $1 Ice Cream Sandwich sold along the streets in pushcarts had always been one of Singapore’s Must-Eat items, so popular that it made into one of BuzzFeed’s listicles in 2016, which (unfortunately) went viral for the wrong reason. The Japanese melonpan (also known as melon bun) was named due to its outward appearance which resembled that of a rock melon, but in fact doesn’t taste like one traditionally. Located at the basement level of Our Tampines Hub is Singapore’s first melonpan specialty shop, offering Plain MelonPan in 2 different sizes: Small (1 for $2.60, 5 for $10) and Large (1 for $3.40, 3 for $9), MelonPan Gelato with 3 options: Small melon pan with 1 choice of flavour ($4.80), Small melon pan with 2 flavours ($6.80) and Large melon pan with 2 flavours ($7.80). Order and payment is first made at the casher before proceeding to the right for selection of gelato flavours from their wide selection on display. Interesting flavours include Avocado, Chendol, Honeycomb, Yuzu and D24 Durian, which are local and relatable. Toppings such as Sunflower seeds, Rainbow sprinkle and Peanuts are available at an additional $0.60 whereas durian toppings are priced at $2.50. I chose the Avocado and Black Sesame Gelato to go with my Large MelonPan Gelato ($7.80) that came with 2 rusks (twice-baked bread). The rusk actually acted as a “spoon” to scoop the gelato instead of licking or biting directly into it. I made the mistake of eating my “spoon” (accidentally) and ended up in a mess while licking the gelato though. Down a few shops from Joo Chiat’s popular Vietnamese restaurant Long Phung is Pho Hanh Delights. The new restaurant was visibly empty, without much décor to speak out, but I wanted to give it a try. Time to support the underdogs, even though half my heart says “Why not just go Long Phung?” Pho Hanh Delights used to be Vietnam Food Hanh Delights at Telok Blangah Food Centre, forced to close due to high rentals. Lady boss cum chef Nguyen Thi Hanh honed her cooking skills in her family’s restaurant in Vietnam, subsequently moved over after marrying a Singaporean husband. The décor did look sad, with pale-looking food pictures (probably shot with a handphone) colour-photocopied and pasted along the walls. Menu was in a black plastic folder. Not the type of place to come if you are on a first date (or even subsequent dates). This may be a hang-out-with-buddies place. With that said, the food actually fared much better than expected. Moral of story: Don’t judge a restaurant by its appearance. The traditional Vietnamese Beef Combo Pho ($7.50) was such an uplifting take after trying so much commercial ones. (Some placed have completely butchered pho.) Sure, the taste and presentation might not as polished as known restaurants outside. But the stock was light yet full-flavoured. Reasonably priced and included with generous portions of beef slices, brisket and balls. Having this on a rainy day may be your best alternative for comfort pho. Again, while the stir-fried Kang Kong ($5.00) didn’t look too appealing when presented, the shoots were crunchy, seasoning particularly fragrant and tasty (may be salty for some). [Taipei] Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice is a well-known eatery (at least among the locals) in Taipei that serves one of the most popular Taiwanese dishes, “Lu Rou Fan” otherwise known as Braised Pork Rice). There are several other places in the Roosevelt Road (Luosifu Lu) neighbourhood that serve braised pork rice, but this hole-in-the-wall dining spot has a reputation for being the best in town. The good news is that this place is budget-friendly with reasonably priced dishes that come in big portions. Keep in mind that there is usually a line in front of Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice, especially during lunch hours. Do not expect too much from the interior, as this place is more like casual local eatery than an actual restaurant. The tables are close to one another, and there is a chance that you will have to share a table with other guests. If you are in a hurry, you can always take your food to go. The Braised Pork Rice, priced at NT$30, NT$40, NT$50 (SGD$1.30, SGD$1.80, SGD$2.50) for their small, medium and large bowls, is definitely the signature dish here at Jin Feng in Taipei. The dish is served with a large amount of rice and topped off with a slice of bitter melon and braised pork. One thing to note is that while Singaporeans are used to bowls with loads of meat with less rice. The reverse seems to apply to many Lu Rou Fan stalls in Taiwan where there is very little meat in contrast to rice. I also noticed that other restaurants that offer this dish tend to serve it with more fat than meat, which is not the case here. [Taipei] One of Taipei’s most instagrammable dessert café of late has to be Sugar Miss, with photos of their famed Marble Cube Cake trending in several social media feeds (at least the Chinese ones). The Marble Cube Cakes come with varied fillings of matcha, raspberry and taro, available in very limited quantities. Each is priced about NT$240 – 265 (SGD$10.80 – SGD$11.90), considered on the higher side for Taiwan, though Singaporeans should be used to these prices for cakes. Do note there is a minimum expenditure of NT$200 required for each customer, which should be easily met as long as you get a drink. Reservations are recommended, as the café can get very popular during the weekends. As I arrived about 2pm, there were just 2 Marble Cube Cake left. The décor looked rather “Lady M” – all clean, white with marbled tables, and ironically Lady M Taipei is just located a short distance away with a moderately long queue. The entire vibes felt rather ‘cold’ though, without the extreme friendliness you see at other Taipei café places. Other offerings included the best-selling Marble Cheese Cake (NT$190 per slice, SGD$8.50), and Mille Crepe Cakes with flavours of Matcha Milk, Earl Grey, Valrhona Chocolate, Taro and Seasonal Fruit (NT$180 – 230, SGD$8.00 – 10.30). The Marble Cube Cake was certainly a good-looker, different from other conventional cakes, placed on a marbled plate on white table. This café certainly knows about how to get good lighting for optimal photos. Unfortunately, taste wise, it wasn’t the most impressive. It was OKAY. While the top molten layer looked melty, it was solidified and didn’t add much taste wise. Beneath was a chiffon layer and raspberry fillings that didn’t quite flow at all. [Ho Chi Minh City] A trip to Vietnam without having some pho would be a culinary crime. Among all Vietnamese dishes that made their way across the globe, this is arguably the most iconic dish of Vietnamese cuisine. The question is: Where to go for a bowl of pho in the land of hundreds of Pho shops, sometimes only a few meters away from each other? Phở Phú Vương started to be a humble pho stall, and grew to two shops with approximately 200 seats in total. The shop specialises in Southern-style Pho, which differs mainly from its northern counterpart in the sweetness of the broth and the condiments used to accompany your pho bowl. Pho Phu Vuong represents the typical no-frills local eatery where there is no ambience to speak of. However the place is covered in white-tiled walls, brightly lit, reasonably clean and relatively spacious as compared to other eateries in town. You come in, you order, waiters bring the food, you eat, pay and leave. At meal time when customers flow in, you certainly have to share tables with strangers. Service is no means courteous or polite one that the West is accustomed to. There are two main seating areas at this branch on Nguyen Thai Binh street, only one has the air-conditioner to help you combat the heat while slurping the tasty pho. You get to choose your pho with a range of beef cut; there is no English menu so this is a Pho dictionary for easy ordering: Tái = sliced rare beef steak Nạm = sliced beef flank Gầu = flatty flank Gân = beef tendon Vè = crunchy flank Sách = beef tripe Thịt Nhừ = minced beef Đuôi bò = ox tail A small bowl costs 55,000 VND (SGD$3.26), a big bowl...

The first thing I noticed about Pho Tai at Capitol Piazza was its people – the owners and some of the kitchen staff (I peeked through an opening) looked well, pioneer generation. Sorry for generalising, as I was quite used to the Singapore-husband Vietnamese-wife combination seen in local restaurants. Turned out this family-owned Vietnamese restaurant had its origins from Paris. The Vietnam-born Chinese family moved to Paris during the 70s to find safety during times of war, and subsequently started Pho Tai in the city of romance. When asked if there is a difference between their Viet pho and a Parisian-influenced one, the owner said that noodles sold in Vietnam may not contain as much meat and herbs, and relied more heavily on the noodles. Also, the soup bases in Vietnam may not be as rich. To make their soup richer, premium ingredients such as beef meat, bones, and herbs are boiled for hours fresh every day. Neither industrial beef stock nor any powdered “pho” mix were used, which the owner commented that some restaurants in Singapore do use unfortunately. The signature items include Beef Steak Slices and Combination Pho ($9.90), Steamed Rice Pancake Rolls ‘Banh Cuon’ ($7.80), Fresh Spring Rolls ($4.80). Marinated Beef Vermicelli ‘Bo Bun’ ($12.80), Red beans with Coconut Milk ($6.00) and Banana and Coconut Milk ($4.30). FYI, the dessert is warm. This is one of the few Pho in Singapore that I thoroughly enjoyed – the soup looking light and clear, yet flavourful, not the type that would make you quench in thrist. Beef slices and tendon were tender, though my friend wished there were some balls of sort. [Taipei] Ah Zong Mian Xian, otherwise known as Ay Chung Rice Noodles 阿宗麵線 used to be my favourite Mee Sua from Taipei. When I say “used to”, it could be as far a decade back when it was crowded, but not flooded with tourists like now. Unfortunately, the standard and consistency was not like in the past as the store gets more commercialised. I was recommended to Chen Ji Mee Sua 陳記專業蚵仔麵線, or Chen Ji Intestine & Oyster Taiwanese Vermicelli Shop. Many call it the “Best Mee Sua in Taipei”, with “original local taste without over promoting”. Mee Sua is a Taiwanese dish that is basically a vermicelli soup included with large pork intestine or oysters. The noodles served with the soup should never fall apart or stick together. At least, this is what the general rule is. Chen Ji Mee Sua looked like an average Taiwanese food stand. No fanciful interior, just a counter where you can order food, and a couple of tables outside the shop. A large bowl大碗is priced at NT$65 (SGD$2.90), smaller bowl大碗at NT$50 (SGD$2.25), with clear vermicelli soup清麵線at NT$35 (SGD$1.60). If you like your pig’s intestines, then you would love the Mee Sua here. I found the pieces extremely soft, tender, and flavourful, and as a friend @eileen_eats_alot described, ”clean unlike some that have strong porky flavour”. Within a few months of opening, it has been favourably reviewed and loved. The owner has a restaurant portfolio that is well loved, namely Mountain Retreat and Secret Garden. These are restaurants frequented by both locals and tourists looking for authentic Vietnamese food in a comfortable and rural setting, They all serve Vietnamese home cooked food, and are packed be it weekday or weekend, which says something about the quality of the restaurants they operate. Secret House is by no means different. You can expect nothing less from the artistic minds behind this restaurant. The main appeal lies in its rural decoration, where an inner courtyard has been smartly and creatively turned into an herb garden. Dark wooden furniture and old-school style tableware also add rustic charm to the dining experience. The menu is extensive, aiming for every day staples of Vietnamese cuisine. Photos are included along with English translation which makes for easy ordering. The dishes are of small portion thus great for sharing, suitable for those with a hankering for every flavour. One can start off with Guava Salad with Dried Baby Shrimp (85,000VND, SGD$5.09) that serves as a good palate cleanser. The guava provided a difference in texture as well as light sweetness to the mix without being overpowering. The right amount of bite for each piece of Deep Fried Sticky Rice (95,000VND, SGD$5.69) topped with sliced mushroom, dried pork floss and minced pork, dipped in chili sauce made another delightful appetizer. The jovial ladies over at A Juicery highly recommended their neighbours next door. ”Best pho ever. And you must have their spring rolls.” They also let me know a little secret that the chef behind Pho.Vn used to be from the popular Mrs Pho, though this piece of information goes unverified. Pho.Vn is a fuss-free casual Vietnamese restaurant that specialise both the popular streets food of the Southern and Northern parts of Vietnam. Some of its specialty includes Special Beef Combo Pho ($9.90), Nam Vang Noodle ($9.90), Broken Rice with Pork Chop and Steamed Ham ($8.90), Stir-fry Cockles with garlic ($6.90), and Fried or Fresh Spring Rolls ($3.90). The dessert of Green Bean Paste ($3.90) is also popular, and sometimes sells out early. The chef is said to be very particular with the freshness of the ingredient, such that she will go to the market to buy all the fresh beef instead frozen meats from suppliers. All the soup bases are cooked for 6 to 8 hours, with “strictly no MSG added”. For starters, I had the Fresh Spring Rolls ($3.90 for 2 pieces) and Fried Chicken Wings with Fish Sauce ($3.90 for 2 pieces). The former was described by my dining partner as ”very ordinary”, though I enjoyed the freshness and crunch. The Fried Chicken Wings were calorie-worthy, deliciously marinated and juicy. Borrowing a tagline, those were finger-licking good. As for the greatest surprise, it had to be the Special Beef Combo Pho’s soup ($8.90). While it looked deceptively light, the savoury broth was packed with flavours and I just couldn’t help slurping spoon by spoon. So good that the sauces seemed unnecessary. Within a week of the first contact, I was on my way out to Shiga Prefecture to see what historical Omi Beef was all about. Sometimes, when you’re given an opportunity like this, you don’t say no and you clear the schedule. I was hit-up to take a trip out to Kansai, a region in the center of Japan that’s home to the Shiga Prefecture and one of the area’s most important lifelines, Biwa Lake. The body of water is an important part of many things ranging from a way of life to how produce is grown, and Omi Beef raised. It wasn’t evident in the beginning, but there are a lot of small nuances to the food in the region that allow it to be such a great place for a culinary adventure. Kazo – Taiwanese Kazu Kazu, Lava Polo Buns And ‘Sexy’ Matcha Latte Bottles, At Chinatown Point

Taiwanese Bakery Kazo has opened at Chinatown Point (nearer Hong Lim Food Centre side), offering a selection of Polo Buns, Cream Puffs, and Kazu Kazu which are long choux pastries. The brand is supposedly popular in Taiwan, with a different name of Nichifu 日芙洋菓子 with stores in Taichung. (My Taiwanese friends have never heard of it though.) Having just returned from Taiwan, I was inevitably curious towards Kazo and its products. Offerings included Premium Ice Cream Polo ($5.50 for 2 scoops, $3.80 for 1), Hokkaido Cream Golden Lava ($3.00), Crispy Cream Puff ($1.80), Kazu Kazu ($3.50), Cheese Tart ($3.00 for original, $3.20 for chocolate or matcha) and Kazoman Beverages ($3.00 – $3.50). This is like many things trending / instagrammable all in one store. The Premium Ice Cream Polo ($5.50) could remind some of Hokkaido Ice Cream Puff, in which you could choose from Hokkaido Cream, Matcha, and Chocolate. The former boosted a more crusty puff pastry and creamier quality ice cream, but lacked of that buttery fragrance. While I wished I could eat the Polo with my hands (like how the photos featured). In reality, the ice cream would start dripping within seconds and scooping from the provided plastic box would be cleaner. I was curious how the Kazu Kazu would match up with the famous Japan’s Zaku Zaku – which by the way has opened in Taipei and ‘inspired’ many other versions. This Kazu Kazu had a firmer crusty outer layer which I did not mind, though its filling of Hokkaido cream was mild and pale in comparison. My sense is the Hokkaido Cream Golden Lava ($3.00) could land up being its most popular item, as local consumers are still fascinated by the idea of flowing lava. Mine was indeed very molten. [Taipei] Yong Kang Beef Noodles 永康牛肉麺館 is known to be one of the best Taiwanese beef noodle joints in Taipei, well-known for its spicy soup. This two-level restaurant serves up signature Beef Noodles with tender Australian beef and chewy noodles in a flavourful broth, definitively a winner judging by the line in front of this dining establishment. (The other famous shop in the neighbourhood is 老张牛肉麵店 Lao Zhang Beef Noodles.) I went at about 10:45am and there were about 2-3 people in the line. Thinking that it should be okay if I take a stroll around the neighbourhood, I returned at 11:00am only to see about 30 – 40 people in the queue already. Many of them brought along their luggage or entire families. Lesson learnt: Come early. Yong Kang Beef Noodles was founded back in 1963 by Mr. Cheng who originally from Szechuan in China. After he finished his military duties, Mr. Cheng decided to open a small stall at Yong Kang Street and sell beef noodles. The stall became an instant hit and started to attract both locals and people from China who moved here to Taipei City. After Mr. Cheng retired in the 1970s, the place was handed over to his protégé, Mr. Luo who is the current owner. As for the interior, it has not much changed over the years. There are dozens of tables and they are usually packed with customers. You will also see the counter with a menu to choose from. There is also a tourist-friendly English and Japanese menu with photos. Most of the tables are round and can accommodate up to 6 people. There are many pho-tastic Vietnamese shops sprouting out in Singapore, as though it is the next fad after Japanese ramen. Few Vietnamese restaurants seem to be as dedicated as Moc Quan though, where baguettes for the banh mi are baked fresh daily, and owner Jeff Koh hand-carries fresh ingredients (about 100kg every 2 weeks) from Vietnam to Singapore. Which is why they close for a day or two occasionally each month. Correct me if I am wrong, many Vietnamese restaurants in Singapore are overly-commercialised losing its authenticity, while the authentic ones lack the comforting ambience. Moc Quan, somehow manages to strike a balance between the two. ‘Moc’ means simple, ‘Quan’ means restaurant, so Moc Quan just means simple restaurant. Jeff designed Moc Quan to be a Vietnamese ‘Zi Char’ type of place, and therefore items such as Thit Kho ($7) – pork cooked with tangy spicy caramel sauce in claypot, Luoi Vit ($7) – duck tongue braised in garlic basil sauce and Dau Hu Chien Xa ($5) – deep fried tofu with garlic and lemon grass are available. There was a weird slight pungent smell when the braised pork arrived, a tad oily, but put the meat into the mouth and you would forgive all of these. It actually reminded me of street food in Ho Chi Minh, like those served around Ben Thanh Market. Their Mixed Beef Pho ($9.50) was superb, generous in vegetables, herbs, meat and meat balls, in a light yet tasty broth cooked with beef bones, brisket and spices. A tad oily with MSG though, but I am willing to overlook that. The best item was indeed the Banh Mi. I had the Bo Bit Tet ($6.50) which came with marinated sliced beef and egg. On the 4th level of the rather futuristic looking (like off a Hollywood set) of Marina One lies two glass capsules. One of them contains Wakanui Grill Dining, an 86-seater restaurant which features steak and lamb from New Zealand. Wakanui, a New Zealand term meaning “to canoe over the land of plenty”’ is a grill restaurant concept that showcases the best available meats from the country. Its first outlet opened in Tokyo in 2011, and its success soon meant the opening of its second outlet there, focusing on lamb chops. Therefore, you could also find some Japanese influences in the menu over in Singapore’s outlet. The stars and the essence of the restaurant are therefore the New Zealand Ocean Beef and Wakanui Spring Lamb, which are grilled over Japan-sourced Binchotan charcoal in the centrally-placed, open kitchen. Starters included Neck Clam Soup ($12), Steamed Green Lip New Zealand Mussels ($22), Hot Smoked Salmon ($24), Seasonal Hassun ($32), Kikorangi Blue Cheese Caesar ($22) and Green Salad ($16) I was recommended by the service manager the Wakanui Spring Lamb Chop ($8) as the starter, and it turned out to be quite exceptional. The lamb had intense flavour and retained its natural juiciness, without the usual gaminess lamb would have. In fact, this would count as one of the most tender lamb chops I ever had. The Wakanui Spring Lamb are raised for approximately six months on the lush and highly nutritious spring pastures, with meat then aged for around four weeks until reaching its peak flavour. This process would ensure that the optimum flavour and texture of the lamb can be enjoyed year-round. Some worthy restaurants go under the radar, which is kind of a waste. I have visited Saigon Alley occasionally, a Vietnamese casual concept located in Novena Gardens, and thought it was not too bad. The menu is said to be inspired by the traditional recipes from Hanoi, featuring comforting home style Vietnamese delights inspired by the street food of Vietnam. So you can expect familiar Viet street food of Pho ($14), Banh Mi ($7 – $9), Spring Rolls ($8 – $10), and other side dishes. But no, they have not achieved ”Nam Nam” popularity status yet. The interior shouted of modern industrial, graffiti art on the wall, with lights throwing out hues of purple and red at night. Songs played are a mixture of English Top 40s (from a few years ago), and Vietnamese tear-jerkers like Cô Bé Mùa Đông. The servers hummed along, and by the way, they also did a competent job in introducing the dishes. Food wise, the emphasis is on the modern usage of fresh ingredients, and strong flavours like mint, coriander, Thai chilli, fish sauce, and many secret herbs & spices to add depth to the dishes. I suspect that most diners would find the Combination Beef Pho ($14) too light and understated in terms of the broth. But I thought that was refreshing in a different way, and allowed for other ingredients to shine through. Well, there are always chilli and fish sauce to bring out the taste – in typical Singaporean dining fashion. Both times, the server recommended the Spicy Australian Beef Noodles ($14), which would probably be a 2-3/10 in terms of spicy level. [Seoul] When I needed a good coffee recommendation, food blogger Daniel (yeah, same name) from Seoul Eats took me to Coffee Libre 커피리브레at Hong Dae near Hongik University Station. The thing that makes Coffee Libre stand out from other coffee shops in the city is the fact that the owners are dedicated to coffee. This is from sourcing the best coffee beans in the world, and choosing to have different brewing methods. Established in 2012, Coffee Libre 커피리브레 is an independent coffee shop in Seoul with branches in Yeonnam-dong, Yeongdeung-po, Shinsegae, and Myeongdong. The name of the coffee shop comes from the Spanish word “libre”, which translates to Mexican luchador wrestlers. The icon on the cup did remind me of Jack Black’s character from the Mexican-American sports comedy film Nacho Libre. Coffee Libre grinds beans for every single cup of coffee, and they have participated in dozens of coffee-related events in the country. I have been to 3 different branches of Coffee Libre. Hong Dae’s branch has more indie vibes for coffee aficionados; Time Square has a much bigger space and appeals more to the young; while Myeongdong’s outlet is a hidden spot right in the middle of a tourist hub. This small branch of Coffee Libre in Myeongdong boasts a quite unusual location, as it is situated within the Myeong-dong Cathedral complex. Yes, right in front of the famous church. The interior is simple and cozy with several tables and a long bar. Guests can choose to either drink their coffee indoors or take it to go. [Ho Chi Minh] Due to the strong influence from French Colonial times, Banh Mi which is also known as Vietnamese Baguette has then been passed down and evolved. It is now the iconic identity of Vietnam’s local food which can be found on almost every street in Saigon. While I would usually think twice when it comes to street food, Banh Mi Hoa Ma was highly recommended by a friend who loves to travel to Vietnam. It also received many positive reviews online. Many also claimed that this is one of the best Banh Mi in Ho Chi Minh. A humble shop which lacks in its own space, many of the locals would usually just come here for takeaways. Due to its blooming business, the owner has then expanded (illegally?) their seating space along the roadside. People would then sit on stools and dine on low tables, while breathing in exhaust fumes from motorcycles zoomed by. *cough cough* For first-hand experience dining like a Vietnamese local, this would be the place to visit. Ordering was easy as there were only two items on the menu; Banh Mi Kep Thit & Banh Mi Op La. Banh Mi Kep Thit (VND 30k, SGD$1.80) is the usual kind of Banh Mi which we would find in Singapore. Baguette with Pâté (pork liver) and butter spread, stuffed with pork and chicken ham as well as pickled vegetables, spring onions and chilli. While they are just simple ingredients, the combination of thick cuts of meaty ham and refreshing pickled vegetables turned out to be quite a heartening meal for breakfast. Interesting to note, I found Vietnamese baguette lighter and airier with crispy exterior. So much so I could finish the whole Banh Mi on my own without feeling too full. It was quite a journey to locate Purist Patisserie, for it was smack right in the middle of a Kovan private housing estate, with no direct train or bus services. Situated at the end of shop houses of The Promenade @ Pelikat, it may be easy to overlook the shop if not for its bright pink interior and rose gold chandelier which caught my attention. Also note its rather limited opening hours, from Fridays to Sundays noon to 6pm. Not the most ideal location to set up a patisserie, but that does not deters Patissier Joanne from pursuing her dreams and setting up a place of her own to showcase her creations. Joanne’s forte lies in French entremet, which her meticulous crafting skills can be observed from the exquisiteness and aesthetic details of every entremet. But when it comes to taste evaluation, it is usually based on Patissiers’ concept as well as individuals’ preference due to the complexity and various components that go into the dessert. I took a liking to the Cebu Sunrise [$8] which consisted of coconut, mango and jasmine rice. The light coconut mousse was well complemented with sweet mango gelatin fillings and added rice cracker base for that crunch. The most aesthetical pleasing award would go to Fleur ($8), layered with thin waffle biscuit base, raspberry mousse and white chocolate. It was further topped with freeze-dried fruits, popping spheres and edible flowers for elevated appealing factor. I also liked how various components blended well to give an overall tangy note. While I usually love matcha desserts, the Zen Garden ($8) slightly fell short of my expectation. Comnam – Sister Restaurant of NamNam Serves Vietnamese Broken Rice

The closure of patisserie Canele has paved the way for Comnam, a spinoff of Vietnamese chain Nam Nam Noodle Bar by the Les Amis group. Comnam is focused on serving Vietnamese dish Cơm tấm, where tấm refers to the broken rice grains, while cơm refers to cooked rice. Funny how broken rice which was previously meant for poorer people, and supposedly has lower fiber and nutrients, is making their way to restaurants. But, why not. Food evolves. I know there are many fans of Nam Nam. Their bowls are reasonably priced for the office crowd, but I never really thought they are that worth-while to queue. With that said, I think Chef-owner Nam Quoc Nguyen’s new take would continue to ride on its wave. The rice bowls are wallet-friendly, from $8.50 to $9.90, with GST included and no additional service charge. A Comnam bowl is a filling one, not stingy with ingredients. My Marinated Fried Pork Cutlet ($9.90) comes with chicken ham, steamed egg, tender pork, fungus, pickles with a choice of broken rice or kimchi fried brown rice (that’s weird). I thought the broken rice worked better in the soup version. The Grey Featherback Fish Balls with soft-boiled egg ($7.90) bowl reminded me of Teochew style porridge, where rice is added to soups. The grains being shorter, soaks up the soup and sauces better, and thus each spoonful and bite was quite flavourful. Plus, no MSG. The small plates may also steal some thunder from the mains. Again, all at friendly prices. I say go for the Crispy Squid ($5.50) – think deep fried calamari (I wished it was not so oily though) and Grilled Chicken Salad with roasted peanut ($5.90). [Taipei] Instagram has certainly changed consumer habits and how coffee shops keep themselves abreast in a very challenging market. Mr R Drinks 雨田先生手冲饮品吧 at Zhongxiao East Road got into the social media limelight with its very photogenic drinks of Rose Milk and Marsh Milk Tea aka Mr Fox Milk Tea. Sometimes, you get other animals on the drink. Do not discount Mr R Drinks, or “Yu Tian Xian Sheng” as another one of those just riding on the Instagram trend. The barista-owner is serious about his coffee, importing coffee beans from various parts of the world, offering hand-drips and takeaway cups. Until he was overwhelmed with orders. When I visited, the shop had a limited menu of Marsh Milk Tea (NT$180, SGD$8.10), Rose Milk, Strawberry Milk and Baileys Milk (NT$150, SGD$6.80), Apple Cider (NT$150, SGD$6.80), Umeshu Soda (NT$140, SGD$6.30), Pikachu Soda (NT$65, SGD$2.90) and… Miso Soup (NT$90, SGD$4). As this is a one-man-show operation and lines can be long, every customer is limited to buying just one cup. During peak hours, you have to get a ticket first before queuing. The barista was seen frothing and making his drinks cup by cup, so wait can be rather long. Each cup took at least 5 to 10 minutes to make. I ordered the Marsh Milk Tea (NT$180, SGD$8.10) only because I was intrigued at the cute fox on the drink. Like how it got there? However, I was slightly disappointed when he handed me a hot frothy cup of milk tea on one hand, a fox on the other enclosed in a plastic packaging, and told me to put it on myself. I see. There wasn’t any 3D latte art involved. For the Rose Milk (NT$150, SGD$6.80) drink though, he helped to carefully place the rose ‘biscuit’ made of egg white...

The one Korean dish that I enjoy for the level of comfort it brings is the Soontofu, the soft tofu stew with ingredients such as seafood and vegetables in a spicy broth. “Soon” in Korean means “soft”. SBCD Korean Tofu House is one of the few Soontofu specialty restaurants in Singapore, with branches at Tanjong Pagar Centre and a newly opened outlet at Millenia Walk. The Millenia Walk branch was HUGE (at least in Singapore’s context), with spacious interior, tall ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and open kitchen concept where you can observe the team of chefs preparing the soups. Don’t have to worry smelling like Korean stew as you walk out as the space is ventilated enough. One important highlight: At the back of the Korean restaurant is where the soft and silken tofu is made FRESH daily. The tofu you are eating is made right in the morning. The chefs from SBCD use special soybeans imported from Paju, South Korea. The area is said to be close to Korea’s Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and contains the freshest-tasting produce due to the untouched nature. Surprise, surprise. The Korean restaurant has also introduced NEW Jang-Eo (장어) dishes – fresh water eel imported from Korea. While the Jang-Eo is popular during the hot summer days in Korea, you seldom see it in Singapore, at least not yet. The NEW menu will comprise of 4 new Jang-Eo dishes including three under the dine-in menu and one for takeaway. Here are the food items you can expect: Unagi Main on Hotplate ($19.90++, with Soju $29.80++) The Koreans love their Jang-Eo – freshwater eel marinated in novelty sauces, with savoury and delicate taste. If you’ve been reading the blog (sorry I’ve been MIA), you may recall my trip to Indonesia in 2015 where I traveled from Bandung to Bali! Along the way, I watched the sunrise at Borobudur Temple, spent magic hour at Prambanan Temple, trekked up Mount Bromo, came face-to-face with the last of the Komodo dragons on Komodo Island, walked along the Jatiluwih rice terraces in Bali, and of course, stuffed my face all day, every day.  This time around, I spent nearly two weeks learning more about Indonesia’s culture, culinary offerings, history and we even got to do some shopping. The trip started with 3 nights in Jakarta, followed by a couple days in Padang, then Yogyakarta for 2 days, and Bali for the remainder of the trip!  I always feel like the best way to familiarize yourself with a country’s culture is through your stomach. [Ho Chi Minh] When it comes to Vietnamese food, my knowledge has been quite limited to Banh Mi (Vietnamese Baguette) and Pho (Beef Noodle Soup). Hence, it thrills me to be able to gain more insights about local Vietnamese cuisine during my recent trip to Ho Chi Minh. Banh Xeo 46A, otherwise known as Banh Xeo Dinh Cong Trang (or literally the Banh Xeo store located on Dinh Cong Trang Street), specializes in serving huge Vietnamese sizzling crepe cake that comes with pork belly, shrimps and bean sprouts. The crepe looked like a huge “mee jiam kueh” (pancake) which came with generous amount of savoury ingredients. Did a google search, and this happened to be one the famous Banh Xeo in Ho Chi Minh. The Banh Xeo (VND 80k, SGD $4.80) was served together with tons of greens, and I was initially sceptical on how healthy the combination would taste. Despite the language barrier, the friendly staff then patiently guided me on the “correct way” to consume Banh Xeo. Using leafy greens as base, you would wrap the crepe together with some shrimp, pork belly, bean sprouts and mint leaves, then dip into the fish sauce chilli before consuming. The chewy texture of the crepe felt similar to some Korean Pancake but thinner, and had refreshing crunch from the bean sprouts. While they specialize in Banh Xeo, the shop also serves up a comprehensive menu of Vietnamese dishes such as Rice Vermicelli dishes, Seafood fritters and Barbequed Meat. Not forgetting iconic Vietnam side dishes such as Goi Cuon (Fresh Summer Roll) and Cha Gio (Fried Spring Roll) paired with fish sauce. [Bangkok, Thailand] Many of Bangkok’s restaurants score in terms of style. The same could be said for Thang Long (which is the former name for Hanoi in Vietnam). Thang Long is located at the Bangkok Wireless Road Neighbourhood, along Soi Lang Suan. While this seems like a quieter stretch of road away from the usual buzz, its hip neighbours include Asia’s Best Restaurant Gaggan (5 min walk down the road) and Wine Bridge Plus (just opposite). Refer to map below Dark wooden furnishing, water features, an outdoor seating area like a bar by the beach and loungy music would appeal to the chic and stylish crowd in Bangkok. The modern Vietnamese restaurant serves food tapas style, so expect dishes from the predictable such as pho, Viet spring rolls and vermicelli, to steam ravioli and deep fried frog legs (!). Its menu was rather confusing though, despite being artistically photographed. The food photos were on one side, while prices were printed in sections somewhere in the menu. Not intuitive enough. We had some of the standards, and liked the Minced Shrimp on Sugar Cane (215 baht) – plump in freshness, and sweetness coming through towards last few bites. The Spring Rolls came with avocado and crab stick (115 baht), which might have worked better if they had worked in if there were more of these two ingredients to make a distinctive difference to the usual. Service was at least prompt, but not the usual Thai-style earnestly. Well, I would remember Thang Long more for its décor than its food, and I don’t mean it that bad a way. Tonkin a Vietnamese Noodle Bar has opened at Orchard Central, with another two outlets at Tanjong Pagar 100AM and Clifford Centre. For fans of Viet food, you can venture down to the basement of the mall (next to Maccha House) for spring rolls, green mango salad, pho and banh mi. I wished I had better words to describe the experience, but it was okay. The Beef Combination Noodle Soup ($9.90) had rather light soup base, with consideration addition of fresh herbs and vegetables. Good for those who prefer broth that is not so heavy or robust. We also had a Banh Mi Pate Belly Pork with Vegetable ($6.90), and wished there was more slices of meat. Tonkin would rank somewhere in the middle for taste. Chen San Ding 陳三鼎青蛙鮮奶 – Best Bubble Milk Drink In Taipei, Near Gongguan Night Market

[Taipei] Chen San Ding 陳三鼎青蛙鮮奶 has been widely reviewed to be the best bubble milk drink in Taipei. It is located near Gonguan Night Market, an area where the university students typically hang out. What? Not 50嵐, Chun Shui Tang 春水堂, ShareTea, 丸作 which all have more swanky shops and long list of beverages. While Chen San Ding is widely known to serve “bubble tea”, there is no tea in any of its offerings. The signature drink is called 青蛙撞奶, directly transported to “frog knocking against the milk”. No frogs are harmed in the process, as the boba (tapioca pearls) used are thought to resemble frog’s eggs. What you get is a cup of boba pearls, caramel, cold milk, with choice of ice. All drinks are affordable priced at TWD40, which works out to be SGD$1.80. This is what you call cheap and good. Upon holding the cup, I couldn’t help noticing that the bottom was warm while the top layer was cold. That is because the tapioca pearls are cooked on the spot in brown sugar, giving them the soft texture and lingering sweetened and caramalised taste. The pearls were indeed soft, sweet, chewy and you just couldn’t resist having more. Like having a mini-party in your mouth. It felt like a kind of stress-relieving munching on them. The milk itself was not that sweet, which made the entire cup kind of balanced. Other drinks such as Ai Yu Glass Jelly, Brown Sugar Glass Jelly, Lemon with Pearls, Green Bean with Pearls are available, all priced at TWD40. While you cannot choose your sugar level, you can have an option of with or without ice. I went early in the morning, and was faced with a queue of about 5 to 10 people. Fans of Vietnamese food would be thrilled to hear about the opening of Mrs Pho House along Rangoon Road, and you can look forward to dishes like Claypot La La and Gong Gong. Not just PHO. Established since 2014, Mrs Pho has been serving their rendition of hearty beef pho at Beach Road, which is a hot favorite among office executives nearby. This is despite the long waiting time during lunch hours, due to the limited seating capacity. Taking over the location of the defunct Grub Noodle Bar, this ‘house’ is more spacious, and makes it more conducive for bigger group dining. So why Mrs Pho HOUSE? Like inviting you to their house, their staff mentioned that they wanted to provide a comfortable dining environment which serves up various casual home-cook Vietnamese dishes, and not just limited to pho. I cannot help but to agree, as many people’s idea of Vietnamese food is limited to just Pho and Bánh mì. If you are a frequent diner with Mrs Pho, you should be aware of their other signature dish, Mrs Pho Cockles ($10.90) which is stir fried “see-hum” tossed with garlic and pork lard. Over here, the cockles are cooked in a clay pot to provide an enhanced smoky fragrance. Probably due to popularity of cockles, there is now an extended seafood menu. Additions include ‘House’ Crab ($32), Saigon Chili Prawns ($12.90), Long live ‘Gong-Gong’ ($10.90) and Love You Long Time ‘Lala’ ($10.90). The conch, or commonly known as ‘Lala’, was slowly simmered with lemongrass to give a clear subtle sweet broth. The ‘Lala’ was fresh and tender, but I preferred to drink the “zhup” (sauce) more than eating the flesh of the shellfish. The usual starters from Mrs Pho also made their appearance, such as Spring Roll ($6.90), Grilled Beef...

[Ho Chi Minh City] A store which piqued my interest while I was researching for Vietnamese street food was The Lunch Lady, which came up as one of the common search results. Many bestowed her with the title of “legendary” street food vendor in Ho Chi Minh. The Lunch Lady (known as Nguyen Thi Thanh) propelled to fame after being featured on No Reservations. It is a food and travel programme hosted by American chef and TV personality, Anthony Bourdian. The store has since then been patronized by many other food influencers from various countries and garnered them a wide following of international visitor ship. (I looked around and noticed a few more tables with foreigners. Her specialty is noodle soup and interestingly, she has a daily rotating menu which serves only one type of noodle soup every day. Seven days in a week, she can whip up seven kinds of noodle soup such as Bun Thai, Bun Mam and Banh Canh Cua. Totally unheard of to me, and the most common Pho is not even on her menu. I wondered would the idea work in SG if I sell Bak Chor Mee Soup on Mondays, Wanton Mee Soup on Tuesdays, Hae Mee Soup on Wednesdays and etc. The amount of logistics and ingredients to buy! I visited the store on a Friday, and the noodle soup of the day was Bun Bo Hue, which translates to Spicy Vietnamese Beef Noodle Soup (VND 40k, SGD$2.40). The bowl of noodle soup felt visually intimidating at first with its bright orange hue, which resembled chilli oil from Mala pot. However, I took my first mouthful but it was nothing like that. I didn’t even found it spicy. A case of being hit with confusion while trying to adapt to the foreign palate....

The Return Of The Taiwanese Bubble Tea craze in Singapore sees old players such as Gong Cha, Singapore brand LiHo and Taiwan’s PlayMade 丸作, all of them with difference in their areas of specialty. Let’s just say Gong Cha is known for their Alisan Milk Foam, LiHo for Cheese drinks (which is now everywhere) and PlayMade 丸作 for their freshly made pearls. Bobii Frutii will be opening its first store in Singapore at The Clementi Mall. I first tried Bobii Frutii 珍珠水果特調 in Taipei which attracted a crowd initially due to its distinct coloured and “Instagram-worthy” layers. Each cup is made using milk, tea and colourful pearls, with no artificial flavourings, man-made essences, creamer or preservatives. The menu in Singapore features a total of 37 drinks in a single cup size and divided into 5 different categories – Tea/Au Lait aka “served with milk” in French ($2.50 – $3.90), Ice Blended ($5.90 – $6.90), Matcha ($4.90 – $6.50), Fruit Tea ($3.90 – $5.90) and Cheese Tea, exclusive to Singapore ($4.50 – $5.90). Pearls aka bobii (Taiwanese slang for tapioca pearls) that are preservative-free come in 3 different flavours: Original ($0.60), Butterfly Pea ($0.90) and Brown Sugar ($0.90), are made in Taiwan and air-flown to Singapore to ensure freshness and consistency. One thing to note, the bobii in each cup is considerably less compared to other competitor brands out there. Apart from their aesthetically pleasing appearance, each of their signature items have funky names that made me wonder what the flavours are, so I gave up on their names and ended up ordering by colours. “Hi, can I have the blue and yellow layered drink?” “Oh, you mean Mermaid’s Tears?” “Ya, that one.” I cried.
